1. Great colours

Keep to a limited palette of four/ five colours only. This makes the painting more unified.

2. Great sketchbooks

Have a few sketchbooks on the go which are the same size. Keep one in your pocket or handbag, one in each of the household vehicles and one at your side in the house. Then wherever you are there are materials to hand to capture thoughts, ideas and sketches

3. Great plein air

Keep painting materials to the bare minimum. Carrying heavy bags filled with too much equipment, will wear you out long before you’ve even started painting.

4. Great brushes

Use as large a brush as you dare. The Ron Ransom small hake brush is a lovely brush made with hogs hairs and a nice wooden handle.

5. Great shadows

Moonglow by Daniel Smith is a fantastic ‘go-to’ dark because it is great on its own, mixes well with other colours and granulates to create interesting effects.
