CHALLENGE – Tonal Study Challenge
Our next Challenge is all about composition and tonal values.
Every quarter we’ll pose a painting challenge and invite you to send us your watercolours on our theme. We’ll be sharing some of your work on our social media channels as the months progress.
How to take part:
Using only one colour, paint a watercolour of any subject. Sound simple? Things to bear in mind:
- Tonal values add depth to a painting – you can use them to show the relationship between foreground, middle ground and background.
- Taking out the options of colour mean you have to really think about tonal values and shape in your painting
- To do a quick check of the tonal values in your painting either squint your eyes or look at it through a pair of dark sunglasses
Once you’re happy with your painting. send us a photograph by email. Include your name so we can find your social media profiles in our records (if you have given them to us). We’ll be sharing on Facebook or on Instagram so follow us to see the challenge paintings emerging.
Have a look at Sue Downie’s tutorial on composition if you’d like to refresh your thoughts on tonal values in paintings.
Deadline for this challenge is Friday 14th June. Start sending your paintings in soon so we can start sharing them on our Facebook and Instagram feeds. We’re really looking forward to seeing your paintings.
Happy painting.
