In May this year I had been observing and painting two particular poppies in our garden, as they developed from bud through to blossom and then seed head. They come up every year in the same place and although I had noticed them in previous years, I had never really observed them closely. I decided to do just that and sketched them every day. They were viewed amid the restrictions of lockdown, and a backdrop of constant COVID19 news. I decided to incorporate some of the news text in this painting as a muted background to the uplifting beauty of the poppies.
