Penny Newman

I always liked to draw and paint as a child, and decided to begin drawing and painting again about thirty years ago. I have attended several one day, weekend and short courses in Cambridge and East Anglia, with a focus on drawing, watercolour, pen and wash and watercolour pencils.
I particularly enjoy painting outside ‘plein air’ where the weather, atmosphere and happenings of the day all contribute towards the completed work.

Open landscapes, trees, plants and flowers and buildings within the landscape are subjects that I return to repeatedly. I also like to paint inside in a more leisurely way and enjoy painting flowers and found objects in representative and more abstract approaches.

I have exhibited art work at Stow cum Quy, at the National Trust’s Anglessey Abbey, at The Missing Sock restaurant in Bottisham, in Newmarket library, at The The Hayard Gallery in Ely and Ely Court House with the Ely Art Society, and with the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists at the open exhibitions at The Edmund Gallery in Bury St Edmunds and their selected exhibition at the Wymondham Arts Centre.

I was the winner of ‘The Museum of the Broads’ Watercolour Challenge in both 2012 and 2013.
